Veteran Stories

Real veterans, in their own words, on what changed after working with Operation Beacon.

For the First Time, Money Wasn't So Tight.

One U.S. Marine veteran found financial relief, peace of mind, and a faster path through the VA system with Operation Beacon.

Rex H. · U.S. Marine Corps

I served in the United States Marine Corps around the beginning of the Afghanistan era. Like many veterans, I started with a small VA rating for tinnitus — just 10% — and honestly didn't know how much farther I could go with the process.

I knew trying to navigate the VA system alone could be frustrating and confusing. There are forms, records, letters, deadlines, and a lot of guesswork. I had heard stories from other veterans about claims dragging on for years with denial after denial.

That's why I decided to work with Operation Beacon.

From the beginning, Paul and the team took the pressure off me. They handled the hard parts, helped organize everything, explained what was happening, and guided me through each step of the process.

What really changed things for me was identifying service-related toxic exposures connected to PFAS and contaminated water exposure during my military service. Those connections helped increase my disability rating to 90%, and later I was approved for unemployability, bringing me to 100%.

That changed my life.

For the first time in a long time, money wasn't so tight.

The additional compensation and back pay gave my family breathing room financially. One of the biggest moments for me was being able to help my wife move forward with cataract surgery she needed. She had been trying to decide whether she could afford additional corrective treatment, and because of the benefits I received, I was able to hand her a check and help make that decision easier.

Without that back pay, I could not have done that for her.

That meant a lot to me.

Now we are also working through other benefits available at 100%, including healthcare through the VA and property tax relief. It feels like we finally have options and stability we didn't have before.

But what stood out most during the process was how supported I felt.

Whenever I had questions, Paul and the team responded. We had calls to walk through what was happening, and everything was explained in a way that made sense. I never felt like I was trying to figure it out alone.

And when my unemployability claim was approved, they celebrated with me.

That mattered.

Operation Beacon didn't just help me file paperwork. They helped me move through a complicated system faster and with less stress than I ever expected.

If I could tell another veteran one thing, it would be this: don't wait.

Trying to do everything on your own can take years and create even more frustration. Having the right people helping you removes the guesswork and gives you a real chance at getting the benefits you earned.

Operation Beacon Changed My Life.

Toby J. · U.S. Army Reserve / U.S. Marine Corps Veteran

I joined the U.S. Army Reserve on September 15, 1990 — I was just 17, still a senior in high school. Five years later, I switched to Active Duty in the U.S. Marine Corps Infantry and was stationed in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii with 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines. When I left service in 1999, no one mentioned the VA or how to get help.

I re-enlisted in 2000, served at Camp Lejeune, and deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. When I separated again in 2003 after recruiting duty, once more, there was no mention of the VA — no guidance, no resources, no next steps.

It wasn't until 2010 — almost a decade later — that I filed my first claim. I didn't know what I was doing. I had no primary care, no C&P exams, and no one explained the process. My claims for hearing loss, tinnitus, depression, and a skin condition from Afghanistan were all denied. I even received a letter saying the VA had no record of my service — despite 13 years of combined Reserve and Active Duty.

Then, in May 2024, I got a notice that I might be eligible to file a claim under the PACT Act. I tried to file on my own but struggled every step of the way. At one point, the VA deleted my entire submission, and I had to start over from scratch.

That's when I found Operation Beacon.

I met Paul through one of their webinars in October 2024. I borrowed money from my family just to join the program — and it was the best decision I ever made. Operation Beacon gave me the tools, structure, and guidance I desperately needed. Their software helped me stay organized, and I learned about things like Veterans Letters and Buddy Letters that I'd never even heard of before.

By July 2025, I received the letter that changed everything: I was officially rated 100% Permanent and Total by the VA.

I went from unemployed, homeless, and deeply depressed to having stability, hope, and a future. I received 13 months of back pay — over $50,000 — and now receive $4,288.15 a month for the rest of my life. I have a home, access to the healthcare I earned, and benefits that extend to my dependents.

All of this happened because Operation Beacon showed me the way.

Semper Fi.

I Finally Stopped Feeling Like I Was Fighting This Alone.

A U.S. Marine veteran who struggled for years with complex claims, worsening health conditions, and financial pressure found clarity, confidence, and life-changing results through Operation Beacon.

Gubiath R. · U.S. Marine Corps, U.S. Navy Reserve, U.S. Air Force Reserve

I proudly served four years on active duty in the United States Marine Corps, followed by additional years in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force Reserves. Service shaped who I am. It gave me discipline, purpose, and pride in serving my country.

But years later, the effects of that service began catching up with me.

I was dealing with serious medical conditions. As my health challenges continued to grow, I knew I needed help navigating the VA disability process.

At first, I tried doing it myself.

Like many veterans, I quickly discovered how overwhelming the system can be. The paperwork, the records, the forms, the deadlines — it was exhausting. Even when I reached out to other organizations for help, the process still felt complicated, slow, and frustrating.

I had reached a certain disability percentage, but my conditions were getting worse, and I knew there were still issues connected to my service that had never been fully addressed. The VA had even sent me letters suggesting it might qualify for additional benefits, but trying to gather records and connect everything together felt impossible.

Then something unexpected happened.

A cousin of mine — another veteran — called to thank me.

Years earlier, I had encouraged him to apply for VA benefits. He followed through, worked with Operation Beacon, and reached 100% disability. Then he gave me Paul's number and said, "You need to call this guy."

That phone call changed everything.

From the beginning, working with Paul felt completely different from any other experience I had before. The process was clear, direct, and organized. Most importantly, it was built around facts, integrity, and real medical evidence.

At no point did I feel like anyone was trying to exaggerate or manipulate my claims. That mattered to me.

I never wanted to feel like I was "gaming the system." I just wanted help understanding what I had earned through my service and how to properly document it.

What amazed me most was the technology.

Operation Beacon was able to gather and organize records in ways I could never do on my own. One of the biggest breakthroughs involved more than 800 pages of outside medical records connected one of my medical conditions and treatment. Previously, I had no idea how to even begin pulling all of that together. Paul and the Operation Beacon system handled it seamlessly.

For the first time, I felt like someone was actually leading the process instead of leaving me to figure it out alone.

And the results came fast.

Within a short period of time, I received a $17,000 retroactive payment and was upgraded to 100% disability.

Honestly, I'm still trying to process it.

That level of financial support completely changed how I think about the future. For years, I lived paycheck to paycheck like many people do — carefully watching every expense and trying to stay afloat.

Now, for the first time in a long time, I feel stability.

I have access to expanded healthcare benefits, dental care, vision coverage, and potentially even student loan discharge after carrying debt for more than 20 years.

But the biggest transformation wasn't just financial.

It changed my mindset.

Living with PTSD and ongoing health issues had affected my confidence and my relationships. I had spent years questioning whether I could really build the future I wanted. But having this support changed something emotionally, too. For the first time in a long while, I felt hopeful and more secure about moving forward in life.

What stood out most about Paul was how available and supportive he was throughout the process.

If I had questions, he responded quickly. If something needed attention, he set up a meeting immediately. Every conversation felt productive, respectful, and focused on helping me succeed.

It never felt transactional.

It felt personal.

If I could tell another veteran one thing, it would be this: don't give up.

You earned these benefits through your service. Seeking help is not wrong, and you do not have to navigate the system alone.

And sometimes, the impact goes far beyond a disability rating.

Sometimes it helps someone finally believe the future can look better than the past.

Operation Beacon Turned Stress Into Hope.

How one U.S. Army veteran went from frustration and denials to confidence, clarity, and financial stability.

Lawrence S. · U.S. Army

I served in the United States Army from 1987 to 1990. After leaving the military, I built a career in law enforcement and worked alongside a lot of other veterans. Over the years, I kept hearing people talk about VA disability claims — what worked, what didn't, who to talk to, where to go. Everyone had advice.

So I tried it all.

I filed claims on my own. I worked with a VSO. I listened to different recommendations and kept taking what felt like baby steps forward. But every time, I hit another wall. My claims were denied, or I was told I needed more information. The process became frustrating, stressful, and incredibly time-consuming while trying to balance work and life.

At the time, I was sitting at 50% disability because of a sleep apnea claim that had finally been approved after years of trying. Everything else kept getting denied, and honestly, I thought maybe I was doing something wrong.

Then one day, while searching online for help with claim language and paperwork, I found one of Paul's webinars from Operation Beacon. I signed up immediately. Within minutes of hearing him speak, I knew this was different.

For the first time, someone made the process make sense.

Operation Beacon felt like the "TurboTax for VA claims." The software and system they built took something confusing and overwhelming and turned it into something clear and manageable. It was plug-and-play. You entered your information, followed the process, and suddenly you had a roadmap instead of guesswork.

But what made the biggest difference was Paul himself.

I felt like I was the student and he was the mentor. Every week, I took notes, followed the homework assignments, and trusted the process. His knowledge of the VA system, the codes, the language — it was incredible. Those 30-minute sessions each week became the best investment of my time.

And it worked.

After years of frustration, my claim was approved in less than 60 days. Paul told me it was one of the fastest approvals he had seen because I followed every step exactly as instructed. I went from 50% disability to 80%.

That increase changed my life.

The additional compensation created financial breathing room. I now qualify for free VA healthcare, and in Illinois, I no longer have to pay property taxes on my home — a savings of nearly $8,500 a year. I've even been able to open investment accounts for my adult children to help them get started financially.

But the biggest change wasn't just financial.

Before Operation Beacon, I dreaded working on my claims. The process caused stress and frustration. After working with Paul, I actually felt excited and hopeful about moving forward. Operation Beacon replaced confusion with confidence.

Now I tell every veteran I know the same thing: follow through and don't procrastinate.

I've already referred several people to Operation Beacon because I believe so strongly in what they're doing. Veterans deserve guidance from someone who understands the system and truly cares about helping them succeed.

Operation Beacon takes away the stress for veterans who feel overwhelmed by the claims process. It gives people peace of mind and a clear path forward.

I Was Ready to Quit.

A U.S. Army veteran almost walked away from the process — until someone finally stepped in and helped him carry the load.

Mark B. · U.S. Army

I served in the U.S. Army for almost eight years.

For most of that time after I got out, I didn't even know I qualified for VA disability benefits. Nobody had ever really explained it to me. I just figured I had to deal with things on my own and keep moving forward.

When I finally connected with Operation Beacon, I was already overwhelmed.

I was back in school, stressed out financially, and trying to manage everything life was throwing at me. Honestly, I almost quit the program before we even really got started. I didn't think I had the time, energy, or patience to go through another complicated process.

I remember telling Paul I was ready to cancel.

And he said, "Before you do that, let me help you."

That's what changed everything for me.

Paul didn't just point me in the right direction and leave me there. He walked me through it step by step. He took the lead when I felt overwhelmed and handled things in a way that made the process feel manageable instead of impossible.

He's someone I trust!

At this point, he feels more like a big brother than anything else. From day one, he looked out for me and never wavered. Even when I felt like giving up, he kept encouraging me to stay with the process and trust it.

And I'm glad I did.

Through Operation Beacon, I went from a 50% disability rating to 80%, and eventually to 90%.

That increase changed a lot for me.

More than anything, it took stress off my shoulders.

Because of my health issues, I'm not able to work the way I used to, especially while going back to school. Having guaranteed monthly income gave me a level of stability I didn't have before. It gave me breathing room mentally and financially.

I still remember thinking after everything we went through: I'm really glad I stayed.

That's probably what I would tell another veteran who feels discouraged or overwhelmed by the process.

Trust the process.

Sometimes veterans walk away before they ever get the help they deserve because the system feels too confusing, too frustrating, or too exhausting to deal with alone. I understand that feeling completely.

But having somebody who understands the process — and who genuinely cares whether you succeed — makes all the difference.

For the First Time in My Life, I Can Breathe Again.

Patti T. · U.S. Navy

I served my country for 10 years in the military. Like many veterans, I believed that when my service ended, I would be okay. I would work hard, raise my family, and figure life out the best I could.

But over time, the physical pain, injuries, and daily struggles caught up with me.

For years, I tried to navigate the VA claims process on my own. I trusted people who were supposed to help, but too often I felt ignored, dismissed, or treated like I didn't matter. I didn't understand the system, the language, or what I needed to do. Every step felt confusing. Every denial felt personal.

There were days I cried and wondered what I was doing wrong.

At the same time, life was hard financially. I was living on very little income, trying to care for my family, pay rent, keep transportation running, and simply survive. I had worked my whole life, but I had never felt true financial security.

Then I found Operation Beacon.

I saw one of Paul's webinars and almost didn't log in. Something told me to join. That decision changed everything.

For the first time, someone listened.

Paul and Drew took the time to explain things in a way I could understand. They answered my questions. They showed me what was happening with my claim. They treated me like a person—not a number.

Most of all, they made me feel like I mattered.

They didn't give up when things got difficult. When claims were denied, they kept fighting. They knew what steps to take and how to move forward. They believed in my case even when I was exhausted.

And then the breakthrough came.

After years of struggle, I was awarded 90% VA disability benefits and received nearly $38,000 in back pay. I now receive monthly compensation that has completely changed my life.

To some people, that may just sound like money.

To me, it means I can pay rent. I can pay car insurance. I can pay the internet bill. I can breathe.

I know what it feels like to struggle alone.

And I know what it feels like when someone finally helps.

That kind of help is life-changing.

For the first time in my life at age 58, I feel financial peace of mind. I feel seen. I feel secure. I feel hopeful again.

I Don't Worry About Money Like I Used To.

Stanley C. · U.S. Army, Vietnam Veteran

I served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. Like many veterans of that era, I carried health issues for years and didn't fully understand what help might be available to me.

For a long time, I was rated at 30% through the VA. I never knew I could qualify for more. I didn't understand the process, and to be honest, I'm not someone who knows much about computers or technology. At 78 years old, the whole system felt overwhelming.

Then my brother told me about Operation Beacon. Paul had helped him, and he said I needed to make the call.

That one phone call changed everything.

Paul was patient from the very beginning. He talked me through every step and handled all the heavy lifting. He made the process easy for me when I thought it would be impossible. He cared enough to keep looking at my case and found other health conditions that should be included.

First, my rating increased from 30% to 60%. Then Paul called again and said we should file for additional conditions. In the end, I reached 90%.

It was life-changing.

That increase meant less stress and less financial pressure. I could replace my roof. I could buy a new air conditioner when I needed one. I could get dental work done. I could stop worrying about every bill that came in the mail.

Most of all, it gave me peace of mind.

I tell other veterans this: if you feel overwhelmed, call Operation Beacon. I was more overwhelmed than most people could imagine, and Paul still helped me through it. If he could help me, he can help you too.

Our country should do more for veterans. Too many struggle in silence. Too many don't know where to turn.

That's why this work matters.

I know what it feels like to carry worry every day.

And I know what it feels like when that burden is lifted.

For the First Time, I Felt Like Someone Was Truly Listening.

After years of trying to navigate the VA system alone, one U.S. Air Force veteran found guidance, support, and a path forward through Operation Beacon.

Steven M. · U.S. Air Force

I served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam era, including time stationed in Thailand. Like many veterans, I never spent much time thinking about how my service might affect me years later. You just move on with life and deal with what's in front of you.

For me, that eventually included health issues tied to toxic exposures during my service and a stroke that changed almost everything.

Before finding Operation Beacon, I tried handling the VA claims process myself. Like a lot of veterans, I assumed I probably wouldn't qualify for much anyway. I had a few failed attempts and spent a lot of time trying to figure things out on my own. The process was confusing, frustrating, and honestly overwhelming.

Then I found Paul.

From the very first conversation, something felt different.

He didn't rush me. He listened.

And after my stroke, that mattered more than I can explain. Even though I had spent much of my career working in technology and leading companies, I was struggling in ways people couldn't always see. Communicating clearly wasn't always easy. Some tasks that used to feel simple suddenly became difficult. But Paul never made me feel embarrassed or behind. He was patient every step of the way.

He walked through my records carefully, explained what the VA was actually looking for, and helped connect issues I never realized could be tied to my service. What I wrote down on my own and what the VA needed to hear were two very different things. Paul understood how to bridge that gap.

For the first time, I felt like someone was truly in my corner.

I trusted him completely.

Within just a few months, I went from 10% disability to 80%. I also received more than $23,000 in back pay.

That result made a real difference for my family. It helped relieve a major tax burden we were carrying and gave us more stability moving forward. But even more important than the financial impact was the feeling that I finally had footing again — that someone understood what I was dealing with and was willing to help me through it.

That's what stands out most to me about Operation Beacon.

It never felt transactional.

It felt personal.

Paul treated me less like a client and more like a fellow veteran and a friend. When we talked about service, life, and the challenges veterans face, it felt like he genuinely understood me.

That kind of support matters.

Especially for veterans who feel discouraged, stuck, or overwhelmed by the process.

If I could tell another veteran one thing, it would be this: don't try to carry this alone. Find someone who will listen, guide you, and stand beside you through the process.
